Is it safe to cut off my labia?

I’m 19 and I can’t afford labiaplasty surgery. My health insurance won’t cover it because they say its a cosmetic procedure. Is it safe to cut off my labia? What are the risks? I really can’t take it anymore as the embarrassment about how it looks is becoming too much. I cry myself to sleep at night because of this. Please help.

I am so sorry to hear about what you are going through. It sounds like you are experiencing severe anxiety and insecurities.

To answer your question: no, it is not safe. Labiaplasty is a form of surgery, and just as it would not be safe to give yourself heart surgery, it is very dangerous to do a “home labiaplasty”. It can lead to infection, and a blood vessel being cut which can land you up in the ER. It can also result in permanent nerve damage as there is a big concentration of nerves in that area.

I would recommend that you try to speak to a counselor or therapist who you are comfortable with, about your insecurities. We often don’t realize it at the time, but these types of insecurities can be influenced by our state of mind and self-image. This can often be addressed through counseling or therapy without the need for drastic physical interventions like surgery.

Surgery should always be a last resort in serious cases where the labia are affecting your quality of life, for example, by getting in the way of physical activities like sports and sexual intercourse or otherwise causing serious discomfort or pain.

  1. Your labia and vulva are so beautiful. You are totally normal and attractive. The negative thoughts we have about ourselves and our bodies have nothing to do with reality.
